If everything goes according to plan, we’ll be bringing you our top 5 goals of the week from around the world. And while many of these will be the most readily accessible kinds of videos such as Major League Soccer’s website and Bundesliga TV (who post goal videos and highlights regularly), nothing is off-limits. Barclays Premier League, Liga MX, Hyundai A-League, International Competition, anything goes. That being said, here we go: the inaugural “Playing For 90 Top 5 Goals of The Week”. Enjoy, and if you think you saw a goal that beats one of ours, be sure to let us know.
If all goes as planned, these videos will be done once a week, most typically on Mondays. Most goals will be posted as individual articles as well, so be on the lookout for Goal of the Week candidates as well, and if you see something worthy of making the top five, do not hesitate to send that video, vine, or gif our way. With a small staff, accidentally overlooking greatness can be all too real a possibility especially with so many great leagues around the world proving such fantastic goals. So tweet at @PlayingFor90 or use the hashtag #PF90TOP5 to get us the goals most deserving of high praise.

David Villa (New York City FC 2-0 St. Mirren FC)

Well, David Villa and NYCFC’s official MLS account opened in unofficial fashion this week in an overseas friendly. The Blues have been overseas a few weeks now for preseason training at Manchester City’s facilities. On the agenda for NYC included a friendly vs. Scottish side St. Mirren. New York won with a comfortable 2-0 lead, but more importantly striker David Villa got on the score sheet. The goal wasn’t exactly mind-blowing, but the Spanish striker controlled a low cross, keeping the ball close with his first touch and sending it to the back of the net with his 2nd.

Villa joined NYCFC from Spanish reigning champions Atletico Madrid last year following the conclusion of the Champion’s League. After a brief stint in Australia with sister club Melbourne City, Villa seems raring and ready to go for the club’s MLS Regular Season Opener this March against expansion counterpart Orlando City SC. Until then, City fans will take comfort in his terrific preseason form, including his 2 goals in 4 appearances for Melbourne.
