Marcelo Sarvas Traded to Colorado Rapids

For those of you that don’t know, the MLS SuperDraft took place on Thursday. While a lot of big named college players were drafted, there was one major trade that took place. Marcelo Sarvas of the Los Angeles Galaxy was traded away to the Colorado Rapids. Per MLS and club policy, specific terms of the deal were not disclosed.

I am shocked to hear about this trade to be honest with you. Sarvas, 33, has been with the Galaxy since the 2012 season and helped them win two MLS Cups in three years. He appeared in 88 matches, 80 of which he started, scoring nine goals and assisting on 19 others.

Some are speculating that he was expendable with Steven Gerrard joining the team once his contract is finished with EPL side Liverpool. Gerrard will arrive in July pending receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

Galaxy Head Coach and General Manager Bruce Arena had this to say

“We thank Marcelo for all of his contributions to our team over the past three seasons. We wish Marcelo the best of luck in Colorado.”

Pretty generic statement and considering who it was coming from, I’m not surprised. Sarvas helped that midfield out and was a steady piece to their three-year run as one of the best clubs in MLS. I’ve seen a few comments regarding the move and a few people would have rather seen Juninho go but understood that Sarvas was older and probably the better move.

Colorado Rapids Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni had this to say before the move was confirmed:

“He is an experienced pro, he’s a winner, he’s a competitor, and he puts the team before himself. We need someone that can guide these guys and I think he’s one of those players that we looked to acquire. Marcelo fits the mold for the kind of player I like in the midfield.”

I couldn’t agree more with what Mastroeni said. Keep in mind that Sarvas is moving to a team that has young midfield that includes 2013 Rookie of the Year Dillon Powers, Homegrown Player Dillon Serna, and Generation Adidas member Marlon Hairston.

This Rapids team just got much, much better. The bigger question that is being asked is why did the Galaxy want to move to the third spot in the allocation rankings? I know I am not alone when some may think they will be making a move for Sacha Kljestan. It has been rumored that he is looking to make a move to MLS and there is a huge possibility that the Galaxy might try to make that happen.
