Mix Diskerud: Four Possible Landing Spots in MLS
After the USMNT’s loss to Ireland, Mix Diskerud spoke to reporters and admittedly said that he is “holding all options open right now” when asked about a move to MLS per a report on mlssoccer.com. This isn’t the first time Mix Diskerud has been linked with a move to MLS, even as recently as this past summer when he was linked with the Columbus Crew.
This offseason though, Mix Diskerud is out of contract so this will be completely his decision as he fields offers from multiple clubs, MLS and European based. Diskerud will surely be receiving many offers so he should have his pick of teams, and we know that MLS teams will definitely be in the hunt.
He has performed well for Rosenborg and over the past few months, he has impressed in friendlies for the USMNT. He has been learning a bit of a different role with his national team, playing in a more defensive position, more so in the October friendlies than the November ones, but he has shown he can be very valuable in that position.
Diskerud’s versatility in the midfield could be a very valuable asset to many MLS teams, looking for that playmaker to control the center of the pitch. He has that playmaking ability to pick out the right pass and give his strikers the opportunity to score. Mix has also shown his ability to score when needed as well, even scoring what was then an equalizer against Ireland.
So let’s take a look at what some possible landing spots for Mix Diskerud could be this winter.

Mandatory Credit: Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports
New York City FC

It seems like whenever there is a rumored upper level signing thinking about MLS, New York City’s names will be in the hat so this will be no different. There have been rumors floating around that New York City FC is looking to add a third DP to their lineup and they want this one to be an American. Could Mix Diskerud be that player?

Let’s take a look at their other two DP signings first. They have signed David Villa, known for his goal scoring abilities and Frank Lampard, who plays in the center of the midfield similar to where Mix Diskerud plays. I do not know if that would shy NYCFC away from Diskerud, my guess is no, but it might.

With where Diskerud has featured for the USMNT as of late, it is possible New York City may go after him as a deeper lying playmaker, one with more defensive responsibilities than Lampard may have. There is also no saying that New York City cannot have Diskerud and Lampard play next to each other and have both look to find David Villa.

Now New York City has stated interest to find another player to play alongside David Villa which could make this discussion of Diskerud moot, but it is definitely an interesting possibility to consider. Signing Diskerud would have to make NYCFC’s midfield one of if not the best in the league right off the bat.

I do not believe he will sign here, but when a team is backed by the same group that owns Manchester City, you can never rule them out.

Oct 16, 2014; Orlando, FL, USA; Orlando City SC fan Jeanna Malines sings during a march to a groundbreaking for Orlando City Soccer
Orlando City SC

Next up is the other expansion side this year, Orlando City. Orlando City is entering the 2015 season with a team on the back of their biggest signing and the current highest paid MLS player in Kaka. Kaka does not need much of an introduction other than he is a wonderful man on the ball and great creator out of the midfield.

Not only that, but Kaka has even recently received a call up to Brazil which he has not had in quite some time. So will Orlando City be looking to add another midfielder alongside Kaka? I guess only time will tell, but let’s take a look at why this may a good signing and why not so much.

Reports have been going around the web in recent weeks that Orlando City is on the search for a second DP. Where they want that DP to be playing is unknown, but maybe Mix Diskerud could fill that spot. Similar to New York City FC, adding Mix to a midfield that already has Kaka would definitely set OCSC’s midfield apart from other MLS teams.

Diskerud is a very versatile midfielder as he has shown in the friendlies over the past month or two for the USMNT. That kind of versatility is something very valued around the league and really all throughout the world. Similar to Frank Lampard, Kaka is not coming to Orlando to make a defensive impact in the midfield. He is coming to score and mainly set up goals.

Unlike Kaka, Diskerud could play more of defensive midfielder. Maybe he would not play a true defensive midfielder, but he could sit back and share some defensive responsibilities. That type of work would surely be coveted by Orlando City and probably many other MLS teams as well.

Nov 9, 2014; Foxborough, MA, USA; Columbus Crew midfielder Tony Tchani (6) dribbles the ball during the second half against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Stew Milne-USA TODAY Sports
Columbus Crew

It should come as no surprise to find the Columbus Crew here on this list. The Columbus Crew came really close to signing Mix Diskerud over the summer this year, which would have no doubt helped their chances as the season winded down and in the playoffs as well. Signing Diskerud over the summer would have been a huge move for the Crew, but it simply was not meant to be.

The negotiations for the deal between the Columbus Crew and Mix Diskerud did come with some controversy over the summer. It was believed that Diskerud’s father may have had something to do with it, but Columbus Crew head coach, Gregg Berhalter put an end to those rumors.

After the deal fell through in the last hours and the transfer window for the MLS had come to a close, the Columbus Crew has expressed interest in looking to the winter to go after Diskerud again, this time for an out-of-contract Mix Diskerud. It does not take much convincing to say that Diskerud would be a huge addition to the Crew.

Diskerud is still very young so he can make an impact for years to come. With the Crew’s rebranding going into full effect next year, as well as the addition of Sierra Leone international, Kei Kamara, the Crew would improve greatly over what was already a stellar side. Add Diskerud and Kamara to the likes of Ethan Finlay and Justin Meram and a host of other good young talents, the Crew would be a huge threat in the East.

Expect the Crew to be big players for Diskerud as January rolls around.

Oct 25, 2014; Dallas, TX, USA; Portland Timbers midfielder Ben Zemanski (14) and forward Gaston Fernandez (10) and defender/midfielder Michael Harrington (5) celebrate the win over the FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium.
