Cascadia Roundup: 2015 MLS Schedule Edition

Cascadia Roundup focuses on stories about all three Cascadia teams–Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps. For those of you that do not know, Cascadia Roundup will be a weekly report on what is going on in Cascadia. This is a special edition Cascadia Roundup. I will be looking at the important games ahead this year for all three teams. Click on the three teams names and it will take you to their respective schedules.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS

I feel I can speak freely when it comes to all of the Cascadia Cup matches; Supporters look forward to every single year. Each team play the other two teams three times for a total of six matches. The first time the Sounders face off against the Timbers will be at home on April 26th. The Sounders won two of the three matches in 2014 and had a dramatic come from behind tie in the two teams April 4th match last season in Portland. 

The Sounders open the 2015 season when they take on the defending Eastern Conference champions, New England Revolution on March 8th. The Sounders will be looking for a bit of redemption from the last time these two teams squared off. The Revolution embarrassed the Sounders 5-0 in New England on Mother’s Day last season. 

Seattle will get their first crack at current MLS Champion, Los Angeles Galaxy in Carson on Sunday April 12th. The Sounders will be looking to shake off their defeat from the Western Conference Finals. 

Seattle will get their first crack at the other fellow Cascadia rival, the Whitecaps on May 16th in Vancouver. This match will round out their cross country trip that begins two weeks earlier when they face off against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium with a stop in Columbus the following week.

The Sounders are the only team in Cascadia that will not head to Orlando City. They play their match in Seattle on August 16th.

PORTLAND TIMBERS

Portland will be looking to rebound from a disappointing 2014 season when they take on Real Salt Lake for their home opener on March 7th. Salt Lake has been a thorn in their side since they joined the league in 2011. 

Portland will have their first Cascadia match on March 28th when they head north of the border to BC Place to face the Whitecaps. 

The Timbers will welcome Orlando City SC to Providence Park on April 12th. Portland will travel to Yankee Stadium on April 19th to take on New York City FC. 

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS

The Whitecaps open their season at home on March 7th against Toronto FC. The Whitecaps will be looking to be the dominate team in MLS from Canada.

Vancouver will be the first team in Cascadia to face off against the expansion side, Orlando City SC. They travel to Orlando on March 21st.

New York City will head to BC Place to play the Whitecaps for the first time ever on September 26th.

The Whitecaps will get to face the team that knocked them out of the playoffs, FC Dallas, on August 22nd. They will then have a home and home series with Dallas on Wednesday October 7th and then head to Frisco, TX on Wednesday October 14th.

During their schedule release, MLS also announced a new playoff format. I’m not a big fan of the new format, but that is a topic for another day.
