Bayern Munich can clinch 10th straight Bundesliga title with win in Der Klassiker

One of the Bundesliga’s premiere matchups — and one of the best club football derbies — will take center stage on Saturday as the last Der Klassiker of the 2021/22 campaign will take place. This fixture could be more sentimental than years past with a lot of buzz and rumors of star players leaving their respective clubs and with championship implications on the line.

The Bundesliga has seen its fair share of superstars play in the history of the league, but on Saturday it could be the end of an era. This classic German football derby, featuring two global superstars in Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund, could very well be the last time they face each other in this derby.

It’s not official yet but reports have Haaland joining Manchester City in the premier league, while there is a lot of buzz about Lewandowski leaving at the end of this summer after failing to agree a contract extension with Bayern.

A win Saturday for the German giants will not only give them bragging rights in the Der Klassiker, but it will see Bayern Munich clinch their 10th consecutive Bundesliga title. There’d be no better place to do it than at Allianz Arena with the home crowd behind the club to celebrate.

A victory for Borussia Dortmund would narrow the gap with Bayern to 6 points with three matches to play. It’s not mathematically impossible for Dortmund to catch Bayern but it would take an epic collapse and Dortmund would have to run the table to snatch the Bundesliga Meisterschale ( the championship shield ).

Head-to-head of late, Bayern Munich has had its way with Dortmund, winning 21 of their previous 39 meetings. The last time Bayern lost to Dortmund was in the 2019 Bundesliga Super Cup. In league play, 2018 saw the last victory for the Black and Yellow.

In league and tournament play, this fixture has produced high-scoring affairs. In the last 16 meetings between them, 14 of the matches have featured three or more goals. Surely we can expect to see some fireworks on Saturday in the final Der Klassiker clash of the season.
