Early life and career:
For many players these days, the allure of big city life and playing for one of the larger clubs in a domestic league takes precedent. This hasn’t been the case for Bartosz Bida at almost any point in his life. In fact, the player has always preferred the comforts of the quiet, small town life. Bida grew up in the small town of Wysokiej Głogowskiej, a small town in the mountainous region of Podkarpacie, Poland. In an interview with Weszlo, he tells the story of his experience in his hometown, and growing up there:
“Wysoka Głogowska has around three thousand residents. four stores, a church, one school and a depot. I’m very happy I come from here. The noise of the city isn’t for me, I like calm. I return to my hometown during holidays, and love to meet up with my old friends.” -Bartosz Bida, Weszlo
His love for calm in his personal life translates over onto the soccer pitch. Former Jagiellonia Białystok manager Ireneusz Mamrot has lauded Bida, stating his biggest attributes as being his positive character and his calm disposition on the pitch. Bida doesn’t calculate too much according to his manager, he just does what needs to be done with a natural finesse rarely seen in players as young as Bida.
While Bida is known for his attacking prowess these days, he started much farther back on the pitch as a central defender. In his early days playing for his first club, Stal Rzeszów, his coach at the time decided to play him in central defense mainly due to his height and strength. He spent two years in the position, and even almost signed with capital club Legia Warszawa in the position, but his mother, who he claims had an immense impact on his footballing career, decided he wasn’t ready for a move to the big city at the time. This decision would prove fruitful for Bida, as a change in management would lead to new opportunities for Bida to express himself on the football pitch.
“At Stal Rzeszów it was definitely important that no one ever barred me from playing football my way, allowing me to take other players one on one, and I was always allowed to express myself. The most important moment at Stal Rzeszów for me was when there was a change in management, when Adam Domaradski and Katarzyna Wis were hired. They came in and changed my position to striker.”
This change would truly spark Bida’s career, as his talent on the pitch truly began to shine. The club’s tolerance and encouragement for his self-expression on the pitch came full circle as his ability to take players on one on one would now serve as one of his main assets to his new attacking position.
Since his transfer from Stal Rzeszów to Jagiellonia Białystok in 2015, Bida has quickly risen through the ranks at the club. He played in their youth system until 2017, after which he had a loan spell with Wigry Suwałki during the 2018/19 season. Since his loan, Bida hasn’t looked back and has worked to become an important member for the Jagiellonia team. So far this season he has scored 4 goals and provided 2 assists in 19 games, which isn’t too shabby for a 19 year old in his first season of top flight football.
Bartosz Bida of Jagiellonia Bialystok is one of the next big talents from the Polish Ekstraklasa that clubs around the world will be looking at to fill their needs at the striker position.

The world of football is currently blessed with an unending reservoir of young talent that academies around the world seem to be producing in an almost conveyor-belt like fashion. Never before has the standard and level of football in leagues around the world been so high, and in many cases these youth players are being given chances that in the past may have been few and far between.

Youth talents are also becoming ever more important as the landscape of the transfer market continues to grow and change. Big money transfers and high player valuations continue to see top talent become more and more out of reach for clubs around the world. Couple that with the effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the football world, and you have the perfect conditions for clubs to not only continue the trend of relying on youth, but also intensify their search for the next diamond in the rough; the next superstar.

Luckily for those clubs, the vast reservoir of youth is ready to be tapped into. In this edition of Europe’s Hidden Gems, we’re going to stick with our exploration of the Polish Ekstraklasa, but this time, we’ll be looking at a talent who plays a bit farther up the pitch than <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/06/16/europe-hidden-gems-bartosz-bida/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/1b280c66/Michal-Karbownik?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Michał Karbownik.

Throughout Poland’s vast footballing history, it is safe to say that they have excelled at producing high caliber forwards and attackers that have found themselves at some of Europe’s top clubs. From the days of Zbigniew Boniek and Kazimierz Deyna in the 70’s and 80’s to modern day forwards such as <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/06/16/europe-hidden-gems-bartosz-bida/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/8d78e732/Robert-Lewandowski?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Robert Lewandowski and <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/06/16/europe-hidden-gems-bartosz-bida/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/85613cf0/Arkadiusz-Milik?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Arkadiusz Milik, Poland has had a keen eye when it comes to offensive talent. Following in their footsteps, the Ekstraklasa has once again produced players that, in my view, will very soon be names of similar caliber to the greats that came before them. One of these players is Bartosz Bida.

Playstyle:

Bida, as we’ve already discussed, is a rather tall and powerful forward, and nothing exemplifies this more than his initial placement as a central defender based on these attributes predominantly. As we’ve also discussed, Bida is a fan of taking on players one on one, one of the many traits that earned him a move further up the pitch.

Despite the relatively low tally of goals for a player in his position, Bida joined the ranks of the Ekstraklasa with a bang, scoring on his debut against top flight side <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/06/16/europe-hidden-gems-bartosz-bida/2/"https://sport.tvp.pl/44157608/bartosz-bida-jagiellonia-bialystok-pko-ekstraklasa">Arka Gdynia, showing his fans and manager at the time just what he is capable of.

In addition to being fleet footed, Bida has a very good sense of positioning for a player his age. Bida doesn’t always have to rely on his ability to dribble past players because he has a knack for ending up in spaces on the pitch that are bereft of opposition players in the first place. In the event that he does receive the ball while being surrounded by defenders, he has the strength to shrug the opposition off and carry on charging towards goal, making him a handful for any defender he faces.

While Bida’s main role on the pitch is to score goals, he offers so much more on the pitch which makes him a well-rounded, valuable player. One of those attributes are his ability to link up with teammates and pick out a pass.

When he was still playing at junior level, Bida wasn’t a fan of <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/06/16/europe-hidden-gems-bartosz-bida/2/"https://weszlo.com/2019/10/29/kiedys-chlopaki-liczyli-mi-zagrania-mialem-siedem-goli-cztery-podania/">passing to his teammates, which of course is very common in strikers, even often lauded as one of the main attributes that makes a successful striker in the first place. That being said, since joining the top-flight of Polish football, his mentality has seemingly changed.

Taking into account the game against Lechia Gdańsk at the beginning of the 2019/2020 season this past September as an example, with just 45 minutes on the pitch, Bida accumulated <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/06/16/europe-hidden-gems-bartosz-bida/2/"https://nowiny24.pl/za-nami-4-kolejka-ekstraklasy-bartosz-bida-wychowanek-stali-rzeszow-znow-doceniony-jak-grali-pilkarze-z-podkarpacia-zdjecia/ga/c2-14347031/zd/37903071">2 key passes and 4 out of 5 successful one vs one duels while playing on the wing, which showed both his versatility and creative ability. His adaptability will be a trait that serves him well in his career, without a doubt.

Potential future transfer destinations:

In terms of the interest surrounding Bida, there isn’t much chatter on the transfer front regarding the player, which for once is refreshing when it comes to young talented players. As of right now, I would think it would be in Bida’s interest to stay in Poland for a couple more years to both play regularly and develop in a comfortable environment. While the moves of other young talents, especially from England have been touted as success stories (which they have been for the most part), the players that have made the jump at an early age weren’t going to get a chance at their original teams in the first place. Not for some time anyway. In Bida’s case, he is becoming an integral part of the Jagiellonia squad and could be their focal point of attack for many years to come.

Of course, at some point, to further develop his career Bida will eventually have to leave Jagiellonia and Poland to play at a higher level. The question is, where should he go? If Bida had a choice, the player seems to prefer a move to either Serie A or La Liga, as per <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/06/16/europe-hidden-gems-bartosz-bida/2/"https://sport.tvp.pl/44157608/bartosz-bida-jagiellonia-bialystok-pko-ekstraklasa">TVP Sport.

“My entire room is covered in posters of AC Milan players. Dida, Maldini, Kaka, Nesta, Pirlo. I watched their games in the Champions League. I really like to watch the Italian league, I’d like to play in this league one day, it is my dream.” – Bartosz Bida, TVP Sport

While his sentiments may lay with Milan, Bida is focused very much on the here and now. In the same interview he very explicitly reiterates this, as if to prove a point:

“The dream is Serie A or La Liga, but the here and now is most important. I don’t want to look too far into the future. I don’t think about transfers too much. If a club comes into to purchase me, and my club agrees to sell, that is when I’ll start thinking about it…I know that it only takes a few bad performances and that interest goes away, which is why I am focused on playing for the first team with Jagiellonia.”

Time will tell whether Bartosz Bida’s dream transfer to Serie A or La Liga will come true, but one thing is certain: Bida is an undeniable talent in the making, one that likely will be on the radar of some of Europe’s top clubs in the near future. One can hope that he can sustain this air of professionalism and commitment throughout the next couple years, and we may just yet see the rise of yet another talented youngster from one of Europe’s lesser known leagues.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
