Life keeps getting more difficult for the Juventus midfield.
It all started when Juve let Claudio Marchisio leave on the last day of the transfer window, meaning they only had 5 central midfielders on the roster. Since then Sami Khedira has suffered multiple injuries, Emre Can has required surgery on his thyroid, and Miralem Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi have been required to play way too much over the last couple of months. This lack of rest has caused an injury for Pjanic and exhaustion for Matuidi.
Juve has overcome their midfield issues for most of this season, winning 14 of the 16 matches they have played in all competitions and only losing once in those 16 matches. That first loss came two matches ago in an embarrassing collapse against Manchester United, but Juve pounced back well in their following match. They won 2-0 against AC Milan in a battle of Serie A’s 2 most successful teams and completely neutralized their former teammate, Gonzalo Higuain.
You could say this season hasn’t gone quite as smoothly for SPAL. They won 3 out of 4 matches to open the year, but have gone just 1-1-6 since then. That run includes a home loss to Frosinone who is really just a Serie B team that snuck into Serie A by less than honorable means.
Juve couldn’t ask for a better time to regroup. The match against SPAL will be a perfect opportunity to play around with a 4-4-2 and give the midfield a bit of a break. They’ll be without Pjanic, Can, and Bernardeschi for this one, but if they play a decent game they shouldn’t get to much of a fight out of SPAL on their home turf.

This season hasn’t gone quite as well for Costa as Juve fans would’ve hoped coming into the year. Since he signed with Juventus permanently he has yet to score or assist a goal, has been suspended for spitting on Federico Di Francesco, and then was injured later that week.

He’ll get a chance to start turning things around in this match and Juve will need him to take advantage of it to avoid a repeat of the embarrassing Genoa match.

RM: Juan Cuadrado

With Costa starting on the left side and Federico Bernardeschi still struggling with an injury it would seem that Juan Cuadrado is the only option for this starting spot. Cuadrado has been pretty average in his appearances for Juve this season and could be on his way out the door in a couple of months.

Juventus has too many options to play on the right wing, especially since Allegri thinks Paulo Dybala should start there. Cuadrado hasn’t really done anything to separate himself from the pack this season, but Juve is pretty desperate for this match. He’ll get the start in this one, but it could be the last one he gets for a while as Juve’s health improves.

ST: Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the best players in Serie A so far this season. It has been more than 2 months since he has gone through an entire league match without scoring or assisting a goal. Over that time he has scored 8 goals and assisted 4 more over the course of 9 matches. His impressive performances have covered up Juve’s attacking struggles they’ve dealt with all season. Juve has looked disjointed and seems to lack a real strategy in their attack outside of feeding the ball to Ronaldo and hoping he does something spectacular with it. Juve will need him to have another special performance in this one because changing the formation and losing their best midfield playmaker definitely aren’t steps towards fixing the attacking issues.

Mario Mandzukic is currently in the midst of his best season at Juventus. He has scored 5 goals and assisted 2 others already this season in spite of recently missing time due to injury.

His outstanding work rate and his stature have made him an irreplaceable part of this Juve attack. We have yet to see him paired with Ronaldo in a striking tandem, but this could give Allegri a glimpse at another tactical option for this season. The wide midfielders and fullbacks should give Mandzukic plenty of service in the box and I wouldn’t be surprised if he added to his goal tally in this one.

GK: Wojciech Szczesny

Wojciech Szczesny once again showed why he is Juve’s first choice at keeper in the match against AC Milan. He wasn’t called into action often, but his save of Gonzalo Higuain’s penalty kept Juventus in the lead and in control of an important match.
