If Manchester United lose David de Gea, everything will crumble

There’s been a lot of talk surrounding Manchester United, involving Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho. However, don’t let that distract you from the fact that David de Gea’s contract runs out at the end of the season.

David de Gea is quite the popular figure at Old Trafford, and rightly so. The Manchester United shot-stopper has bailed out his club many times in the last few seasons and honestly, without him I don’t know where they would be right now.

Which is why I’m surprised to see there has been no media coverage of his contract situation. Well, I say that, but there has been a recent report from the usually reliable ESPN. The outlet has claimed that United remain confident that he will sign a new deal. While I hate to be that negative guy, confidence is not good enough. Talks have been ongoing since August, and progress needs to be made a priority.

He is dubbed as the best goal-keeper in the world for a reason. Not just because United are a big club, but because he genuinely is the best in the world. Playing for a team as defensively vulnerable as the Red Devils are currently, he’s often the last resort. United find themselves in eighth place of the Premier League, which should be better, but they wouldn’t even be there if it wasn’t for the Spaniard.

The United board aren’t stupid, despite what they may lead you to believe. They will know they have deeper issues than just the Pogba & Mourinho spout. If United are serious about climbing out of their deep hole, then I expect to see some serious progression in these talks within the next few weeks.

You best believe clubs across Europe will jump at the chance of signing de Gea on a free. It goes without saying, but Real Madrid will be licking their lips. Leaving the talks any later will only generate media attention, and of course, this will begin to sway the Spaniard out of the club.

His work between the sticks isn’t the only thing which impresses me about him, though. He’s also a dedicated professional, who only has time for providing the best for his fans. He could have just as easily got caught up in this whole Pogba dilemma, because in my opinion, he is twice as important to the side than Pogba is. But instead, he’s kept a cool head, and gave his all to making United’s situation better.

Do you think David de Gea will sign a new contract at Manchester United?
