England has a talented squad going to France this summer for EURO 2016, but these are the eleven that should start.
After England’s miraculous comeback against Germany the other night, there has been a bunch of talk surrounding this team. Although they are young, they could have the talent to win the EURO this summer in France. They went undefeated in qualifying and, because of this, much is expected of them in the tournament.
But many questions are surrounding this team concerning who should start when it comes down to competition time. Claims that Wayne Rooney should not even be in the squad has arisen and the youth of some players seems to come into question when it comes to Roy Hodgson.
Without a doubt, though, this England squad is full of talent, young and old. In recent tournaments, though, when they have had opportunities, they have squandered them. This year should be different. New faces flood this team and those new faces can bring a winning change.
I have England in an unconventional 4-3-3. It is almost a 4-3-1-2 but, let’s be honest, with the one most likely being a forward in an attacking mid role, it is more of a 4-3-3. When it comes down to it, there will only be 11 representing England this summer, and here is who those eleven should be.

Forster and Butland have earned praise from their respective teams, Stoke City and Southhampton, Hodgson said that he has already assured Joe Hart he is the number one keeper ahead of the EURO Finals.

Hart has 13 clean sheets this season to lead the Premier League, ahead of Petr Cech for Arsenal. He also has over 60 saves this season.

He knows how to lead a top-notch team from the back and can help lead this team that has young players scattered throughout the squad. He has played in huge games for Manchester City and England. This tournament will be no different for the 28-year-old. He will be looked to for leadership and to make big saves in crucial moments for England.

10. Nathaniel Clyne

The outside back positions are spots that are potentially up for grabs. Glen Johnson, Kieran Gibbs or Leighton Baines could be chosen for this slot, but I think it should be Nathaniel Clyne. Clyne is a 24-year-old outside back for Liverpool, who has stepped up for both club and country recently.

Clyne was the server for Jamie Vardy’s classic goal against Germany last week to help propel them to victory. In the 4-3-3 that England should play in, Clyne will add an attacking option on the outside, acting as a defensive outside midfielder. He can get down the flank and send balls in for the England forwards to head home, or, in Vardy’s case, to back-heel home with class.

He seems to be the choice that Hodgson will go with throughout the tournament. His question will be if he can hold his ground defensively. He has had a solid season for Liverpool, but has struggled recently on the defensive side. If he can regain his form, he will surely be the go-to outside back for Hodgson and will be depended upon to create along the flank for this attack.

9. Kyle Walker

I realize Walker and Clyne are currently competing for the right back position, most likely to be won by Clyne, but the outside back opposite of Clyne has to be Kyle Walker. I realize it is not likely, but the best players should play. Just the first of many Tottenham players that deserve to be the lifeline of this England squad, this outside back needs to be in the first team.

Although these players are fighting for the right back position, Clyne has played on the left before, so why not play the best in both spots? Baines has also been considered for the spot opposite of Clyne, but Baines is 31 and on his way out, while Walker and Clyne are both young and could make a dangerous outside back duo in the future.

Walker is one of the quickest players in the Premier League, which benefits outside backs, especially in a 4-3-3. He can get forward to support the attack when needed, but he has the speed to get back and stop the counter attack or any other attack for that matter.

He, like Clyne, adds a new dimension to this lethal attack that England has. He can whip balls in and can even make runs in behind with his lightning speed. Although potentially unlikely, if Walker and Clyne both start, this England team would not only be better immediately, but would gain experience for the future.

8. Gary Cahill

Although Cahill was dropped from the side for the Holland match, it still seems that he should be starting for this English side when they open the EURO’s against Russia. Cahill and John Stones have been battling this position out recently. Even though Stones is younger and could potentially have a great future for England, he is going through a big slump at the moment and it showed against the Netherlands.

Gary Cahill captained this side due to Rooney’s injury as England went on to beat Germany 3-2. John Stones definitely has the talent to be great in the future, but England is worried about the present, and Gary Cahill is the guy that they should look to in the present. He knows how to lead, he has played alongside John Terry. He is 6’4” and can climb above most forwards to win headers.

He was put on the bench for the Holland match and John Stones was given a golden opportunity. After the Netherlands beat England and a crucial mistake from Stones, his position is in question and should be given to someone who can lead from the back and has the experience that this English team needs.

7. Chris Smalling

Playing alongside Gary Cahill should be Manchester United center back Chris Smalling. Smalling was often questioned at United until this year he has stepped up in many ways. He seems to be the obvious choice here in most people’s minds, including star English forward Jamie Vardy. Vardy said that Smalling was his toughest defender to get by this season.

This is what England needs. A center back who can not only win headers and dominate in the air, but that can shut down a star forward that they will most likely see this summer. As Wales is in their group along with Russia and Slovakia, Smalling will occasionally be called on to help defend against the likes of Gareth Bale and Russia’s Roman Pavlyuchenko.

At 24, Smalling has some experience with the national team, but not much. He can learn from Gary Cahill. He not only has a great future for England, but he is also ready to star for them now. Most people are saying that Chris Smalling will start for this team when they head to France and I would agree.

6. Eric Dier

At 22, Eric Dier is a very mature player for his age. He has helped lead Tottenham to second in the Premier League right now and he will help in leading England this summer. He will play right in front of Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill. Not only will he help to shut down the attack before it gets to the last line of defense, but he will help in keeping possession and help in moving this team forward to attack.

Dier has quietly become one of the best players in the Premier League. He is not flashy and doesn’t score many goals, just three this season, but he plays the defensive midfield role better than most. Although he is young, Dier needs to start for England. He can help hold down the fort for a defense that has been questioned throughout qualifying and most recently in friendlies leading up to the EURO’s.

He started and scored against Germany to help lead the English to a great comeback win. He has started 30 games in the Premier League this season and start this summer when England looks to stun many people in France. He will help calm this team and help lead this team well beyond just group play.

5. Ross Barkley

This area of the field is where the youth of this talented English team will start to show. At 22, Barkley will be making his first start in a major competition for England, along with Eric Dier and the next midfielder. But, they all deserve to start.

Barkley deserves to start because of his strength and his ability to keep the ball extremely well. He almost always finds his way out of trouble for Everton and don’t expect anything different when he starts for England this summer. He is already a fun player to watch, but he will be a great player for England in the future.

Barkley has scored eight goals and has seven assists this season for Everton. Along with his creativity, he adds some much-needed size to this midfield. At 6’2”, Barkley can win a header against most midfielders he faces.

Although young, he, like Eric Dier, does not play like he is young for Everton. The question is whether or not he can play like that for England. If he has confidence for this English team, he could help lead them deep into this tournament. Even if he is lacking confidence, England need him to step up and start for them in this midfield role.

4. Dele Alli

Dele Alli is one of the most exciting young players, not just in the Premier League, but in the world. His creativity is beyond his age and he has the skills to back that creativity up. He scored one of the best goals of the season against Crystal Palace that shows his talent.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://playingfor90.com/2016/04/01/englands-predicted-starting-lineup-euro-2016/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/dWlMisOtshk?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Not only does he have the talent, but he works hard. At 19, he will be the youngest starter for this England team, but he will be looked to create for the attackers in front of him. He has scored seven goals this season and has produced 12 assists.

Although he is young, much will be expected out of him quickly for this English team that might need to score a lot of goals in France. But for Alli, he should not be lacking in confidence as he has proven to be one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League. He will start for England and he could be a difference maker for them going forward.

3. Wayne Rooney

Many people have questioned whether or not Rooney should be in the starting lineup when they open against Russia this summer. But for me, he should be the captain for this young team. He is the best leader that England has and that could be his biggest upside for this team. They need someone who can step up and lead. It seems like that could be Joe Hart or Gary Cahill in the back, but upfront Rooney will be the leader for this squad.

});

He also has a little bit of experience in scoring goals. Although he has had an offseason for Manchester United, being hurt, only scoring seven goals and four assists, he should still be in the starting lineup for this team. If Raheem Sterling was healthy, I might consider him for this position, but with him being hurt, it seems like a no brainer to me to put Rooney in the first team.

At 30, Rooney will be hungry to finish (most likely) his international career (major tournaments) in style. He works extremely hard no matter where he plays. At Manchester United, when he was healthy, he wasn’t surrounded by as many weapons as he will have for this English team.

Now, he will not be looked to in order to create everything. Rather he will be looked to in order to lead and help calm the young talent on this team. Barkley said he has helped both on and off the field with confidence. England need that experience to help this team as they head to France.

2. Harry Kane

Harry Kane is without a doubt one of the most prolific goalscorers in England. And there is no doubt that he will have the confidence to transfer that goalscoring ability to his international team. Kane is also one of the young guns on this squad, at 22, but he will be looked to in many ways.

He has scored 21 goals this season for Tottenham, who is scattered throughout this English team. Expect Kane to treat his English experience much like Tottenham’s, if there is a ball to be finished, he will tuck it home. The two strikers in this 4-3-3 (or 4-3-1-2) are in form and they can be counted on to score goals for this team.

Kane also brings a hold up play ability to this team. When England needs to keep the ball for a while, he can be the forward who checks in and out and helps keep possession. He does this for Tottenham. He often checks back, receives the ball, plays it off and then checks out. It is just a way to help calm this team down and help them to keep the ball when they aren’t attacking.

It would be a surprise if Harry was not in the starting lineup and the only way it would happen is if he was injured beforehand. He needs to start, he deserves to start and he will start for this team come game time.

1. Jamie Vardy

Undoubtedly one of the best sports stories in a long time. No more than five years ago (more like two years ago), this guy was on nobody’s radar and had nobody’s attention. Now he has the attention of everyone who knows anything about sports. But that’s another post. Vardy has proven that he is one of the best in Premier League and has already shown what he can do on the international level.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://playingfor90.com/2016/04/01/englands-predicted-starting-lineup-euro-2016/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/yruTbpJSO6M?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Vardy is one of this team’s most athletic players. At 29, he still has the athleticism to outrun and out jump most defenders. With 19 goals and six assists this season for the magical Leicester City, Vardy has already brought some of that magic into this English squad. Vardy will be the forward to make runs in behind Kane. While Kane is checking back, he will make his run behind, Alli will play it through and he will finish like he knows how to do.

He makes this England team much more versatile and will help this attack as they look to out score any team that gets in their way. The story of Vardy lives on and it will continue to live on as he should and will start for England come summer time.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
