Step 1: Retain Diego Costa
Chelsea must keep hold of their talisman for next season. End of story. There are countless rumors linking him half way around the world and the Blues cannot afford to let them become a reality.
While the Spanish striker is far from keeping out of controversy, the positives with Costa far outweigh the negatives.
He’s a prolific scorer. We can see that from this season. In 2016, he’s been Chelsea’s biggest goal threat by far, with no one looking remotely as deadly.
Furthermore, he understands how to lead the line. He runs the channels, makes smart runs, and battles defenders for position. What has to be the best part of the Spaniard is that he is clinical. He doesn’t usually miss easy chances, something that can’t be said of Chelsea strikers since the first departure of Didier Drogba from the club (i.e. Torres/Eto/Ba/etc.).
I think that Costa represents Conte’s managerial style on the pitch quite well. He is a born competitor and is willing to push the envelope to win matches. This is the type of style that Conte craves and will likely support.
This backing from his manager will allow Diego Costa to play on the edge and terrorize defenses the way we’ve seen him do in his two years in England.
Step one for Conte: Keep Diego Costa in West London.

Whether Conte will elect to move to a two-striker system remains to be seen. If this is the case, he will absolutely need a reinforcement. However, even if he elects to stick with Costa as the loan striker, he needs a replacement that won’t represent a drop off in talent. Chelsea need another prolific goalscorer up top.

Gonzalo Higuain represents one option, though he would cost the Blues a pretty penny to bring to Stamford Bridge. Higuain has quite the reputation in Serie A and seems to be scoring goals for fun. He would be a strong addition to the Blues, if he can be convinced into leaving Napoli.

Looking past the Argentine, Javier Hernandez wouldn’t be a bad option. Currently plying his trade with Bayer Leverkusen, the “Little Pea” is scoring goals at a premium in the Bundesliga. While he won’t be known for his size, Chicharito finds the gaps and always seems to be at the right place at the right time.

Furthermore, he would be a good super sub for Chelsea, as Sir Alex utilized him during his time with Manchester United. He would be a good buy for the Blues.

Chelsea are also linked with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Antoine Griezmann and Mauro Icardi. All of these would be good alternatives, provided they could be convinced to join the West Londoners.

Overall, this is one area the Blues must invest in. Sure up the offensive reinforcements and goals won’t be as hard to come by next season.

Conclusion

Overall, there is much to be done in West London. Chelsea’s strike force needs to be updated in order for them to be more of a threat in front of goal.

This season, they were one-dimensional at best going forward. Basically, they waited for Diego Costa or Willian to pull out something magical. Other than that, they were very limited in what they were capable of.

Next season they cannot afford to have the same options. They need choices to pull from. There must be the ability to play a two-striker system if need be. There has to be healthy options to pull from off the bench and give Conte the ability to change the context of the game.

Diego Costa can be the first choice. But there has to better alternatives than injured, past-it strikers. Chelsea’s progress depends on how the Italian manager handles the Blues front line.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
