Manchester United prepare their summer David de Gea replacement
Manchester United must have been done some extensive scouting of goalkeepers over the last number of years, given the amount of times they’ve come close to losing David de Gea. However, up until now, they haven’t had to pursue said replacements.
But given the news that broke yesterday, claiming they were open to offers for the Spaniard, they must be more probing in their research of goalkeepers.
According to this report from the Daily Star, Nick Pope is now part of the shortlist which will only be added to as Manchester United approach the summer transfer window. However, there will inevitably be competition, especially if Pope impresses at the Euros.
Manchester United would be building a great foundation
I hate to bring this age-old cliché into the equation, but by signing Nick Pope, United would have two solid, homegrown players to choose from. Dean Henderson is staking a claim that he should be the number one goalkeeper under Solskjaer, as he is in great form since coming in for De Gea.
This would suggest to many that United won’t need to sign a replacement if De Gea leaves the club this summer, for Henderson IS his replacement. But to rely solely on Henderson would be silly, although he’s proven he can be the number one.
Adding some healthy competition, and even a more experienced professional to learn from, would do Henderson the world of good in his development.
Burnley sit 15th in the Premier League table, which is nowhere near the level Pope wants to be playing at. Although he has done a good job at protecting his side between the sticks with nine clean sheets, his defence has let him down more often than not. That said, he will want to play for United and in European competition hopefully. That is his level, after all.
