Manchester United have bid farewell to their pursuit of Harry Kane but it should come as no loss to the fans. Here are three reasons why he was never the answer anyway…
The summer transfer window will, or should soon be upon us. It’s bound to be a complicated one given all that’s going on in the world and Manchester United are confident they can be prudent in the uncertain times.
According to the Guardian, the Red Devils will “not be able to” sign Harry Kane this summer, given the economic climate. However, it should come as no sweat as all along, I’ve never advocated for the transfer anyway.
1. If he had any drive, he would have left Tottenham by now
One of the main concerns I have about Harry Kane is his drive. I am of course talking about his drive to succeed, as I’m sure he’s very good at the steering wheel. Although, not as good as Ole (okay, I’ll see myself out).
Tottenham do not win trophies. This is not news to anyone and it certainly shouldn’t be news to Manchester United fans. Yes, they receive all the accolades for their youthful squad and rightly so but in the last few years, what have they really done except apply the pressure?
A player of Kane’s abilities should be expecting better things from his club, yet he has persisted through the trophyless seasons. Call this loyalty if you will, but to me, it signifies a lack of drive since he has had many opportunities to join clubs where he could win silverware, such as Real Madrid.
So that’s one reason why Manchester United, one of the most successful clubs in football history, is right to not sign Kane.
Onto the next.

2. His recurring injury problem

Harry Kane is a truly extraordinary player and a worthy goal-scorer when he is on the pitch. However, the problem is that this is not anywhere near enough.

See, one of the main things that has hindered Kane’s progress is that he is frequently on the injury table. This is a strain for Tottenham and it would have been the same problem for Manchester United, so it’s good they dodged this bullet.

The Red Devils need someone they can rely on, not a player that only adds to their problem. It’s no secret that <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/04/21/manchester-united-3-harry-kane-answer/"https://fbref.com/en/players/65cb97b8/Ole-Gunnar-Solskjaer?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been unlucky with injuries since he took over, with his star players <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/04/21/manchester-united-3-harry-kane-answer/"https://fbref.com/en/players/867239d3/Paul-Pogba?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Paul Pogba, <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/04/21/manchester-united-3-harry-kane-answer/"https://fbref.com/en/players/a1d5bd30/Marcus-Rashford?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Marcus Rashford and <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/04/21/manchester-united-3-harry-kane-answer/"https://fbref.com/en/players/8b788c01/Anthony-Martial?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Anthony Martial all nursing significant injuries during his time as boss.

Luckily, United have the depth to fill these positions but they mustn’t chase a player that would only exacerbate their need to rely on second-choice options. They need a striker they can rely on in terms of fitness if they are to make progress in the league.

This is also a factor as to why Kane shouldn’t join Manchester United, if we’re being fair. It can be argued that the main reason a club has a bad injury record is that they don’t put enough care into the fitness and wellbeing of their players.

3. There are cheaper options elsewhere

As confident as the Manchester United board try and make themselves seem for this transfer window, we can see right through it. It’s an economic crisis and no club is bigger than that. You can “exploit” it as much as you want, but there’s no way you can be sure of signing the big-money players at a time like this.

Harry Kane was bound to come at a price and negotiating with Daniel Levy isn’t easy at the best of times, let alone during a global pandemic which limits face-to-face interaction. There’s no escaping it, you’re either coughing up the valuation (if you pardon the pun), or you’re not getting Kane.

The Coronavirus, plus the other two problems addressed beg the question, is Kane really worth pursuing? Well, my answer is obviously no. Especially when there are bound to be cheaper options on the market.

The main one being Arsenal’s <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/04/21/manchester-united-3-harry-kane-answer/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d5dd5f1f/Pierre-Emerick-Aubameyang?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He has arguably been better than Kane since he arrived in North London anyway. He is bound to be much cheaper and not just because Arsenal is easy to manipulate. He looks to be on the way out this summer anyway, so Arsenal isn’t going to demand an extortionate fee.

So, those are my reasons why I think Manchester United shouldn’t feel too let down by their giving up of Harry Kane. After all, he was never right for them anyway.
