Arsenal has located the wrong solution to their defensive vacancy
Arsenal should be on the hunt for a defender in the summer transfer window, but that’s not to say they should sign ANY defender…
It remains to be seen what will be done about the summer transfer window. The world is full of uncertainty right now due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Arsenal, though, will give their all into preparing a summer transfer strategy just in case the window still goes ahead.
What they need most, and you’ve definitely heard this before, is a centre back. I know, it’s not exactly news, is it? It seems every single transfer window for the last 78 centuries, fans have been calling for defensive reinforcements.
In fairness, they have gotten those defensive reinforcements but it’s the players they’ve signed that have kept the problem persistent.
David Luiz and Sokratis Papastathopoulos have both come in over the last few years but they are surely bound to be the next out. This is the problem, Arsenal sign ageing centre backs on the cheap and then wonder why they keep needing to resign new ones.
Well, it would appear the Gunners haven’t learnt their lesson. According to Teamtalk, Arsenal is part of a growing number of clubs interested in signing Dejan Lovren. The Liverpool defender is out of favour under Jurgen Klopp and is subject to a move away this summer.
I would be in favour of giving Arteta all the autonomy in the world this transfer window. But this requires the backing of the board. Simply put, the best option for them is to invest and keep their noses out. Arteta knows what Arsenal need, Stan Kroenke who knows nothing about football doesn’t.
So, Lovren would not be the right option for Arsenal. They need to invest in a younger option and, quite frankly, a defender that would be an improvement on what they already have. Lovren would not even make the second team so I’m not sure what the motivation behind this transfer is. Unless it’s simply paper talk, of course.
Who do you think Arsenal should sign in the summer transfer window, or whenever it occurs?>
