5. Harry Winks
I’ll admit, this one is a bit of a long shot. Harry Winks isn’t a regular member of Tottenham’s match day squad at the moment. Projecting him as a potential club captain certainly places a great deal of belief in his potential.
Winks’ inclusion on the list also assumes that Lloris finishes his career with Tottenham. It isn’t as if the Frenchman is going to give up the captain’s arm band before leaving the club. As long as he’s a regular starter for Tottenham, he’ll remain in charge on the pitch.
Lloris could easily stay at the club for another five years. If he does, you have to project a youthful player as the club’s next captain. Winks may be a little too young for the honor, but he is probably the best choice in his age group.
Tottenham would also prefer to have a home-grown, English captain if at all possible. Winks checks both of those boxes as well. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him don the captain’s armband one day.

4. Eric Dier

Last season, Dier would have appeared much higher on this list. Unfortunately, his mediocre play during the 2016-17 season has significantly dulled the physical midfielder’s reputation.

In all honesty, he’s been thoroughly outplayed by Victor Wanyama. The only reason Dier is a regular starter at the moment is because of Toby Alderweireld’s injury absence. That’s a serious decline from where he stood in last season’s pecking order.

Even though he’s having a down season, it’s not hard to imagine him bouncing back quickly. When he’s fit and firing, he can be a dynamic presence in the middle of the pitch. He isn’t afraid to put a physical challenge in or back up his teammates if a conflict arises.

We’ve also seen evidence that Dier isn’t afraid to yell at a teammate on the pitch. That’s something good captains have to do from time to time. If Dier’s form gets back on track, he could certainly be Tottenham’s next captain.

3. Dele Alli

The precocious midfielder is arguably Tottenham’s most important player at the moment. Alli is certainly the engine capable of making the Spurs’ attacking midfield hum.

It’s easy to forget just how young he is. Alli and Winks are both just 20 years of age. He’s got plenty of time to grow into his game and leadership style.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://playingfor90.com/2016/11/11/5-tottenham-stars-spurs-next-captain/2/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/uoOJOkCI6VM?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

The one strike against Alli serving as a captain is his propensity to be a bit naughty on the pitch. He still has quite a few petulant moments and is prone to lose his cool. That isn’t something you can allow your captain to get away with.

If becoming Tottenham’s captain was based purely on ability, Dele Alli would be an obvious choice. He will need to work on his composure and poise if he really wants to inherit the captain’s armband one day.

2. Harry Kane

The prolific centre forward came very close to finishing number one on my list, but he barely missed out on the top spot. Instead he checks in at number two on the list of potential Spurs captains.

In many ways, Kane already serves Tottenham as a leader on and off the pitch. He’s the face of the club off the pitch and is generally their most productive outfield player when he’s fit. Don’t let his injury absence obscure your memory on just how talented Kane really is.

It’s easy to forget just how young Kane is as well. He may look and play like a veteran, but he’s still just 23-years-old. Kane has plenty of prime playing years in front of him.

Provided he stays healthy, and stays at Tottenham, he has an excellent chance to take over for Hugo Lloris. Spurs fans will hope that both of those conditions are met.

1. Danny Rose

Before Mauricio Pochettino arrived at Tottenham, suggesting that Danny Rose could become the Spurs captain would have elicited howls of laughter from fans at White Hart Lane. Now, he strikes me as the best choice to take over the captaincy once Hugo Lloris is done with it.

Rose isn’t the most talented player Tottenham have, but he is the man who plays the hardest every match. I’ve written on several occasions that Rose is the club’s heartbeat. What better quality could there be for a Tottenham captain to possess?

The only thing working against Rose is his age. He’s 26, which certainly isn’t old, but does make him one of the oldest members of the squad. Lloris could hang on to the armband too long for Rose to remain in his prime.

All Tottenham fans have learned not to bet against Danny Rose though. He’ll run through a wall for the club and there isn’t another member of the squad I’d rather have lead the troops on the pitch. Rose has had a terrific career ascendancy and it could culminate with becoming Tottenham’s next captain.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
