Alex Morgan nets her first goal in the WSL for Tottenham

Alex Morgan scored for Tottenham in their first league win on Sunday.

Alex Morgan netted her first goal for Tottenham, scoring a penalty kick in their 3-1 victory over Brighton on Sunday. It might be premature to declare that the sailor has her sea legs back, but at the very least it’s a step in the right direction.

This goal was significant for Alex Morgan for a handful of reasons, the first being it’s the USWNT striker’s first goal since having her daughter Charlie and marks progress in her journey to return to the peak level she left the game at in 2019. On top of that, having been the only player to miss a PK in their recent loss to Arsenal, the feeling of sending a PK cleanly into the back of the net so soon after the miss had to have been a much-needed confidence boost.

Her goal helped solidify a win that marked Tottenham’s first win of the season in the WSL, sending them up to 9th place. For the time being, they’re no longer spiraling to the depths of the league table, which can only be a significant morale boost for the team. Sunday was also the debut of Tottenham’s new head coach, Rehanne Skinner. She couldn’t have hoped for a better start.

Though there was plenty of cause for celebration all around, both Alex Morgan and Tottenham still have a long way to go. Morgan is still lacking the fitness she needs to be at her best, and she has yet to score a goal in the run of play. And though Tottenham has recorded their first win of the season, it was against a team in the bottom half of the table, and they’ll have much tougher challenges ahead of them.

Nevertheless, things are looking up in North London, and Alex Morgan can celebrate briefly until little Charlie snaps her back into the reality of motherhood and daily life.
