El Tri makes quick work of Guatemala in first game of 2020
Team Mexico returned to action after a 316-day hiatus, easing past Guatemala 3-0 in a friendly at Estadio Azteca Wednesday night.
Henry Martín, Orbelín Pineda and Sebastián Córdova found the net in the first half and Mexico put it in cruise control after that. El Tri failed to generate much offense in the second half and coach Gerardo Martino can’t be too happy about that.
Still, it was nice to see the team back in action again. And greater challenges await. El Tri was set to depart for the Netherlands on Thursday for two matches.
However, this October FIFA window is becoming one giant headache.
El Tri is scheduled to play against the Dutch in Amsterdam on Oct. 7 and against Algeria in The Hague on Oct. 13. Eight of the players named to the squad will miss the upcoming Matchday 13 games. Liga MX clubs are also worried about player fatigue, especially those with multiple players chosen for the Europe trip.
The itinerary would have El Tri returning late on Oct. 14 with Matchday 14 scheduled to begin on Oct. 15. The Chivas are particularly concerned since the Guadalajara derby against Atlas is set for Saturday, Oct. 17.
Before “Tata” named his roster for the Europa trip, Liga MX teams frantically lobbied the national federation to have some of their players selected for the Under-23 training camp instead of the senior El Tri. The U-23 camp takes place in Mexico as that team prepares for the Olympic Games, so those players would be available for Matchday 13.
Even MLS clubs sought to discourage selection of its players because upon return to the United States those individuals would have to quarantine for at least two weeks, forcing them to miss several games.
The Chivas front office was among the most vociferous of Liga MX clubs as five of its players were called up for last week’s training sessions ahead of the game against Guatemala. Some reports hinted that strikers J.J. Macías and Alexis Vega were miffed at management for trying to block their invitations since both are eager to get exposure in Europe.
Heading into the summer, a Macías transfer to Europe was seen as a sure thing. Agents for the pair had even sent out notices to clubs in Europe advising them that their clients would be in Holland.
As it turned out, Guadalajara defender Gilberto Sepúlveda is the only Chivas player who will be on the El Tri plane. Coach Martino thinks the 21-year-old could be a natural successor to Héctor Moreno, another left-footed central defender.
Cruz Azul coaches no doubt breathed a sigh of relief Wednesday after it was announced youngsters Santi Giménez and Roberto Alvarado will report to Jaime Lozano’s U-23 camp in Mexico City on Oct. 5. That will make up for the loss of midfielder Luis Romo who departs for Europe with El Tri on Thursday night.

<h3>América coach criticizes national team operation</h3>
<p>Miguel Herrera was also a protagonist in the skirmish between Liga MX clubs and El Tri. “El Piojo” lambasted the national team organization in fiery comments after Sunday’s scoreless draw against Cruz Azul. The Aguilas had four players in the El Tri camp last week.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, ESPN’s Tom Marshall tweeted that Herrera declined to retract his criticism of “Tata” Martino’s midweek camps. “El Piojo” claimed that “his players worked double sessions” and were exhausted when they reported back to América ahead of the <em>Clásico Joven</em>.</p>
<p>Herrera also whined that he wasn’t allowed to conduct similar camps when he was Mexico’s coach, Marshall wrote, complaining that “foreigners are listened to more.”</p>
<p>Herrera’s original comments came after goalie Guillermo Ochoa suffered an injury during pre-game warm-ups. Herrera immediately – and insistently – blamed the national team training regimen that “Memo” took part in. He even threatened not to allow Aguilas players to attend future El Tri sessions.</p>
<p>The two-a-day training regimen was a frequent target of club complaints as El Tri’s midweek camp featured morning and afternoon sessions.</p>

<p>Martino reacted calmly, assuring reporters that the entire workout program is scientifically assessed with full attention to how players respond. He also said the national team does not negotiate with club teams about which players it invites to camps.</p>
<p>Herrera <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/10/01/el-tri-wins-martino-training-regimen/"https://www.milenio.com/deportes/futbol/claudio-suarez-miguel-herrera-equivoco-atacar-tri">got raked over the coals</a> by national sports media types (what else is new?) who pointed out the irony of the situation. As a former coach of El Tri, “El Piojo” knows full well how things work with the national team.</p>
<p>Several reporters were quick to point out that under “El Piojo” the Aguilas have suffered a plethora of muscle injuries. Herrera might have been on the defensive in an effort to deflect the questions about his own training methodologies.</p>
<p>In addition to losing Ochoa before the Cruz Azul match, América lost central defenders Emanuel Aguilera and Sebastián Cáceres to leg injuries DURING the game against the Cementeros. Aguilera had even left the previous game with a muscle pull and was subbed out to protect him ahead of the <em>Clásico Joven</em>. The fact that he reinjured his leg prompted some questions about the Aguilas’ medical team.</p>
<p>This latest group of casualties marks the sixth game out of 12 in which Aguilas players have been forced out of a match with muscle strains. Aguilera also came out of the season opener, asking to be removed in minute 10 with a leg ailment. On Matchday 10, Roger Martínez exited only 10 minutes after coming on for Federico Viñas who himself left with a leg complaint.</p>
<p>During the 10 games of the aborted Clausura 2020 season, two Aguilas missed time with muscle laments. The season before that, three América players were forced to the sidelines with fatigue and muscle strain.</p>

<h3>Xolos playing catch-up after Covid outbreak</h3>
<p>Matchday 11 is finally in the books as Tijuana hosted FC Juárez Wednesday night in a game suspended after 14 Xolos players tested positive for coronavirus.</p>
<p>The home team got the game-winner in minute 79 when Juárez goalie Iván Vázquez Mellado strayed way outside his box in an ill-advised attempt to intercept a long pass. Xolos forward Gerson Vázquez (only 18 years old!) got to the ball first, easily rounded the stranded keeper and slotted home.</p>
<p>It was the Xolos first Liga MX action since Sept. 13. Tijuana still has to make up a Matchday 12 visit to Santos Laguna which has been re-scheduled for Oct. 11. But first the border town team will host the Chivas on Sunday.</p>
<p>Speaking of the Chivas, much has been made of the good fortune the <em>“Rebaño Sagrado”</em> has enjoyed. Some might cynically call it favoritism.</p>
<p>Through 12 games of the Guardianes 2020 season, Guadalajara has seen six opponents ejected. During the moments they’ve enjoyed a man advantage, the Chivas have scored six times.</p>
<h2>Clásico Capitalino on tap at Estadio Azteca</h2>
<p>The Pumas-América match just won’t be the same without the rowdy fans stirring things up. Still, the 119th <em>Clásico Capitalino</em> will be the marquee showdown of Matchday 13.</p>
<p>The Aguilas will struggle to patch together a defense as Miguel Herrera’s top three central defenders are unavailable. A potential fill-in, veteran Paul Aguilar has also been ruled out with an ankle problem. That means mid-season pick-up Luis Fuentes (a Pumas product) will likely team up with teenager Ramón Juárez in the middle of the back line in front of second-choice keeper Oscar Jiménez. Headaches for “El Piojo.”</p>
<p>The Pumas will be without starting goalie Alfredo Talavera who is on duty with El Tri. “Tala” was the clear MVP for UNAM during their 10-game unbeaten streak to open the season. Otherwise coach Andrés Lillini has a full roster to choose from as he hopes to guide the Pumas out of their two-game mini-slump. A win at the Azteca would boost UNAM past their crosstown rivals into third place.</p>
<p>As it happens, the <em>“universitarios”</em> have not lost a regular-season match to the Aguilas in more than three years. That last <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/10/01/el-tri-wins-martino-training-regimen/"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhQLKPcY-zw&feature=onebox%22>Am%c3%a9rica win (2-1)</a> came on Aug. 5, 2017, thanks to goals by Oribe Peralta and Cecilio Domínguez.</p>
<h2>Toluca coaching search</h2>
<p>Lots of rumors that <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/10/01/el-tri-wins-martino-training-regimen/"https://www.transfermarkt.es/hernan-cristante/stationen/trainer/45455/plus/1">former Diablos coach Hernán Cristante</a> is being recruited to take over after “Chepo” de la Torre was fired Monday, the fourth <a href=https://playingfor90.com/2020/10/01/el-tri-wins-martino-training-regimen/"https://playingfor90.com/2020/09/08/liga-mx-coaching-carousel-spin/">manager to be sent packing</a> this season.</p>
<p>Cristante – a legendary goalie who helped Toluca win six Liga MX titles – posted a 62-30-44 record as coach of the <em>“Choriceros”</em> from 2016-2019.</p>
