Who will be Tottenham’s next captain?

First off, let me say that this piece has nothing to do with recent reports about a potential contract dispute between Hugo Lloris and Tottenham. It is simply a commentary on who might succeed the French keeper. This is not an issue I think Mauricio Pochettino will face in the next year or two.

It must be said though, that having a keeper serve as captain is a bit of an odd choice. Most managers prefer to have an outfield player wear the armband. Theoretically, they have the ability to talk to their teammates more of the time on the pitch.

For Tottenham though, it’s clear that Lloris is the right choice. He may not speak often, but when he does, the rest of the squad certainly listens. Lloris also happens to be one of the most talented players in the squad. That isn’t a requirement per se, but it helps establish the legitimacy of any captain.

Whatever Tottenham star takes Lloris’ place will have big shoes to fill. We examine the top five players who could become Spurs’ next captain.
