Manchester United could lose another midfielder in January

An already thinned Manchester United team is looking likely to lose another player

Manchester United have not started their season on the right note. Currently in eighth place, the team looks disjointed in attack and lackluster in defense.

Fingers have been pointed at every player and manager at the club. Jose Mourinho has been criticised for the interesting tactical decisions he has made this season, with one of them being the benching of midfielder Ander Herrera.

Herrera has featured in just 69 minutes of league play for United this season. The obvious choices of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic have seen significantly more minutes than Herrera, but some situations should call for the Spaniard.

Even Scott McTominay has logged more minutes than Herrera, logging nearly double the amount of time on the pitch. This is not a knock to McTominay’s ability as much as it is a shot at Mourinho’s team selection.

Herrera was nursing a bit of an injury during this season, but he has yet to make an appearance since United’s embarrassing defeat to Derby County in the league cup back in late September. This, among other reasons, is why United could lose Herrera in January.

Atletic Bilbao could look to steal Herrera back should Manchester United see him as excess. The Spanish club has a very strict transfer policy that limits their incoming transfers.

Bilbao only signs players that are either born in the Basque Country or have trained with a club in their youth there. The minute section of Northern Spain has produced some truly great footballers over the years, and Herrera happens to be born in Bilbao.

His playing days for United seem to be coming to an end, so this move would greatly benefit his playing career. Herrera’s four-year stint with Bilbao was his last in Spain before his Premier League move, so he could be looking to wind down his playing career back where it all started.

Bilbao should be intently looking on bringing Herrera back to Spain this January. His days are numbered at Manchester United, and Mourinho does not look to be changing his feelings on the midfielder any time soon.

Do you think United are wise to sell Herrera in January?
